So my mom told me she read my book the other day. *Blink* First thing she says is, “So, is there a requirement for a certain amount of–um–love scenes in your book?” And I explain that no, it’s just gotta be hot. She then asks, “Are they all that–um–hot? Does everybody use that kind of language nowadays?” Now you have to understand my mom was an avid reader of HQ Presents. And I always stole hers and read them when she was done. Sooo this is a bit of culture shock for her now. I don’t know if she’ll be reading my books anymore. But she’ll buy them to support me :)

So I started my EC Caveman. Like literally made myself start typing at ten minutes to midnight last night. Just so I’d have something on paper. Something to get me going. I got a few paragraphs, started my nifty word meter thing on the side. But I’m blog hopping, and post surfing in Divas, and I’m kind of wondering if I’m wasting my time entering. There is some stiff competition. Including a ton of in house authors at EC. I mean I know they read the entries blind (or at least I heard they do) and I should really be more confident. But I’m such a realist. It’s rather annoying.

Oh! I forgot to mention, the ladies of Literary Sass are posting my review a week from today. Scary stuff. It’s like Happy 4th of July! Now bend over and grab ankles!

I cancelled my agent appointment at Nationals. It was with someone from the Knight Agency. I had already considered canceling, because all I have to offer currently is erotic romances. And I’m not sure they want to represent that. But then I got my time slot and it was right during the Passionate Ink party, where I also find out how I did in the Stroke of Midnight contest. Sooo I cancelled. But I kept my post lunch appointment with editor Shannon Combs from EC. I guess I better figure out how to pitch… it’s been awhile.

All right. Now my pic of the day is to celebrate the opening of the new Superman movie. This is reality for ya.

I think you should enter the EC contest. First, you’re a good writer. The proof is that CP is buying your stories, and for what I’ve heard, they don’t buy stories from fools. And second, you want to make writing a career. Going into EC is the big leagues. And if you want it badly, you gotta grab the bull by the horns and do it. Besides, you’ve been subbing to editors and agents. Isn’t subbing to EC any different from them? So go ahead and do it!

That’s true, Silma. And it’s not that I don’t want to get into EC. It’s my big goal right now, way more important than trying to sell to NY. But my concern is I don’t have a chance in hell :)

  3. 3

Shelli I agree w/Silma. Go ahead and enter. No matter what you have another story to sell

Okay, that is a really funny pic.

I would die if my mom read my stuff. She’s the type that would say: Honey, where did you get your inspiration for that sex on the kitchen floor scene? Is that firsthand experience? And she’d go on and on about it…

And you should definitely enter that contest. You TOTALLY have a chance. Just go for it!

  5. 5

JUST DO IT! Enter the contest, Shelli. The story will be fabulous. And if they don’t buy it, sell it somewhere else. Cos you’re awesome. ;)

If you don’t try then you’ll never know right? So do it!

Sorry about the agent appt, but you can’t miss the Passionate Ink awards thingy!

    Love the pic.

I feel you about your mom. I was chatting with my mom on YIM the other day. She said, “I read your book.” Pause. Pause. Pause. “It was good… considering.”

“Considering?” I thought she was going to say considering it wasn’t my cup of tea or something like that.

But, noooooooooooo! “Well, considering it wasn’t your best.”

Huh? I have to admit, it really hurt my feelings. Hubby says it’s just that “she doesn’t want her little girl writing smut.”

    Er… too late?

Good luck with EC, Shelli. You can do it!

Shelli, I don’t know if you know JAC on divas. She received a rejection on her caveman entry, but ellora’s liked her story enough that they asked for it to be expanded and resubmitted.

I’d still say go for it. Worst case they say no, best they buy..middle of the road, they ask you to revise and resubmit, but just not for the caveman. Which to be honest, if I had the chance to get an “in”, regardless if it was caveman or not, I’d totally go for it.

Your choice. But you’re too good a writer to not try. ;)

    Go for it, Shelli!!

LOL about your mom… I’m sure my own mother’s reaction to what I write will be mighty interesting…

    Love the pic too!

They are all right. If you have something and the time to do it…go for it. It’s never wasted because you can always use the story for something else later!

    LOL on the pic

Hi Shelli! Found your comment on my blog. I’m so THRILLED you enjoy Woman of Unknown Origins! Thank you so very, very much!

I think my mother would freak if she read some of my material. My dad has read it, but not mom.

Shelli – definitely sub your caveman story. You’re a great writer. You can do it!

  12. 12

Shelli, what’s the worst that they can say? No thanks? *shrugs* So what? At least you know. But are you willing to go on living with the uncertainty that maybe you could have won? That maybe your story could have been right there in EC’s Cavemen Anthology? It’s a gamble, hon. Every time we write a story and go out to sell it, we know that it stands a 50/50 chance. Besides, if they don’t like it, you can always find another home for the story. ;)

  13. 13

    Think fireworks, honey. ;)

Good luck with Ellora’s Cave. I’d have to agree with Tempest. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

    Best wishes.

    Shelli,

When my mom read my e-book, Carnal Devotions, she said in her email that I must have a much better sex life than she does! (And that’s a given, because she’s a divorced single woman who hasn’t dated in probably fifteen years!) But she’s supportive and will always buy my books.

You should definitely enter EC’s caveman contest. I am. Like someone said, the worst that can happen is they reject it. We all get rejected at one point or another! That’s a given in the publishing world!

Oh, and I want to enter your contest so I can win that PIRATE’S BOOTY! ;) Thanks!

    Kate (aka Diva Kim)
